Houston Peach Celebrates 50 Years

During the spring of 1962 some six or eight members of the Macon AAUW branch living in Warner Robin, finding that adverse weather conditions seemed to prevail each meeting night and thinking that Warner Robins could support a branch of its own, discussed with friends the possibility of organizing their own branch.

Mathews Wins Again

"Thomas" by Margaret Mathews

Margaret Mathews, artist and long-time Houston Peach branch member, received word Tuesday that her entry, “Thomas” was one of the six winners for the AAUW Art Contest. This is the third win for Mathews with the “Red Door” in 2009 and the “Red Bicycle” in 2010.

Six images were selected to appear on note cards to be mailed to tens-of-thousands of AAUW members across the country this spring. Three images that received the most votes at the end of the voting period were selected and three were selected by past winning artists who will served as judges.

This is the fourth year in a row that branch artists were selected. Jane Winston, a winner last year, was a judge.

STEM Speakers

Erika Leslie and Margaret Molyson

Houston Peach Branch enjoyed the guest speakers, Margaret Molyson and Erika Leslie at the November meeting. Molyson is the Chair of the Science Department at Houston County High School. Leslie is a senior at the same school.

Molyson traced her career in the sciences and talked about female students of today. Leslie was one of only 40 female students selected as a NASA Aerospace Scholar for 2011.  Erika spent a week working with NASA engineers at the Johnson Space Flight Center (JSC) in Houston this past summer.

All of the trip expenses, including transportation, were funded by NASA.  The program is known as WISH (Women iScience, Technology, Engineering and Math – High School).  Erika competed with hundreds of other high school junior women for this honor and was one of only 40 selected from across the U.S.  Erika has lots of photos and is willing to do an interview to share about the experience.
