Implicit Association Tests

The Gender-Science IAT that was discussed at our April meeting is not the only test of its kind offered by Harvard. These tests may also be of interest to our members:

  • Disabled – Abled
  • Black – White
  • Young – Old
  • Fat – Thin
  • Gay – Straight

The tests take no more than ten minutes to complete and a full list can be found here.

Implicit Association Test

In our April meeting, someone brought to our attention that Harvard has a website dedicated to implicit association tests (IAT). The Gender – Science IAT was discussed as part of the Why So Few? report.

I recently took the test, which can be found here. The results of my test follow:

Your data suggest a moderate association of Male with Science and Female with Liberal Arts compared to Female with Science and Male with Liberal Arts.

I found my results slightly confusing. Even though I wrote my first short story at the age of 4 and have always loved reading, the liberal arts was not my first career path. In fact, the first career paths I chose as a child were (in order and also starting around the age of 4): Astronaut, Mission Control person, Veterinarian, something else regarding animals and Attorney (with possibility of running for Judge or moving to another political office).

I now invite you to take the test and post a comment with your results.

Eleanor Granum Award Open

Each year the Warner Robins Branch of the American Association of University Women solicits nominees for their Eleanor Granum Award which honors a woman or man who has shared time, energy, talent and knowledge through volunteer service to others in the Middle Georgia area.  (Houston and Peach counties)

Eleanor Granum was the Founding President of the Warner Robins Branch.  She and her husband raised their family here, and she has—through the years—given volunteer service in countless ways on the local and state level, without regard to recognition or reward. We wish to recognize others who share Eleanor’s enthusiasm for assisting others, and who serve without recognition.

Please be aware that any volunteer effort is worthy.  Education and the style of the written application form are not considered. Please download the form here or click on the Eleanor Granum menu.

Alzheimer Awareness Day Coming

Karen Kinsler, Director of Development, Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter Central Georgia Regional OfficeAlzheimer’s reports.

Advocates from all over Georgia will be gathering at the Capitol in Atlanta to bring awareness to the needs of Georgians coping with Alzheimer’s and other related dementias. A FREE bus will be provided from the Central Georgia area for all those interested in joining us at the Capitol to make our voices heard during the 2010 legislative session.

We will provide all participants with a purple, long-sleeve advocacy t-shirt to wear so we can create a “sea of purple” at the Capitol…we will also be providing lunch for all participants.

This will be the second year we have blitzed the Capitol during the legislative session…we had tremendous response to our efforts last year and are planning for an even bigger event this year…There are several issues we will be asking our legislators to address on that day and having as many advocates as possible joining us at the Capitol to show their support for the initiatives will help our cause tremendously…

We are having a get together this Wednesday, January 27th at our office from 9:30 – 12:00  to go over the activities for the day and the initiatives we will be presenting to the legislators…attendance at this session is not mandatory in order to join us on the 8th but is recommended is at all possible so you can help about our plans for the day and get familiar with what the Association will be asking for.

Do you think you may be able to join us for the Day at the Capitol…if so, just give me a call so I can get you signed up for the bus and give you more details about this exciting awareness event…thanks again for all you do to support the cause of Alzheimer’s…hope to hear from you…
