Celebrate Action Network Successes in 2009

The AAUW Action Network had an impressive year in public policy. Check out the AAUW website for all the details. Here are some of the highlights.

  • Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, signed into law by President Obama on January 29, 2009.
  • Enactment of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
  • Successfully supported Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation to the S.S. Supreme Court.

Holiday Bags Delivered

Doris Carter, the coordinator of the case management program for CCSP, was so tickled to receive our generous gifts. Although they had received a couple hundred bags for the clients, AAUW bags by far were the biggest and fullest! They will go to the poorest of the poor, since the bags were full to overflowing with goodies. Sharon Dawson, AAUW member, and Aging Services Manager for the local Area Agency on Aging said, “For the third year in a row, you have opened your hearts to serving our community’s older adults. Thanks so much for your commitment and caring. It is much appreciated!!!!”

Wonderful Party

Ms. Sibley, Schomer and Dawson

Thanks to Jane Winston for hosting the annual holiday party at her home. We had a catered dinner, plenty of wine and good conversation and a trivial pursuit game that required many brain cells. Evelyn Merk outdid herself with the research to come up with questions relating to Santa Claus, the Nativity story, and Hanukkah. Nineteen members attended.

Run-off Election

Don’t forget to vote December 1 for Mayor of Warner Robins. There is also a run-off for the at-large position for Council Post 1. Early voting is available next week.

Meet Candidates

The Warner Robins Area Chamber of Commerce will host the second annual Middle Georgia Regional Political HobNob, sponsored by Cox Communications, on Thursday, October 29, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Galleria Conference Center,  located in the Galleria Mall, Centerville .

This event is designed to be an old fashioned political rally with an expected attendance of over 400 people.  The purpose of HobNob is to give Chamber members and others in the community an opportunity to meet with candidates and representatives from their campaigns on a one-to-one basis.  The Chamber will be inviting all candidates appearing on the 2009-10 ballots, including the Senatorial, Gubernatorial, Congressional candidates as well as the candidates appearing on all municipal ballots throughout the Robins Region.

November Meeting

The Lowe’s Toyota meeting space turned out to work very well. The rest of our programs will take place there Lowe’s Toyota is located at 375 South Houston Lake Road. Please park near the northern fence line or by the wall of the service area. Come through the showroom to take the elevator to the second floor, turn left and then right at the end of the hall. The meeting space has plenty of room with a nice kitchenette area.
