GRITS

Girls Really Into Technology and Science GRITS, is the second generation of the popular read it together program. Jane Winston and the committee are working on a  new direction for 2012 with the emphasis on STEM activities for girls.

Huntington Middle School will participate in a five week program emphasizing STEM activities starting March 1, 2012

GRITS, Girls Read It Together in School, was born out of a need for a new Equity Project. In 2005, Equity Chair, Jane Winston, had the idea for all 5th grade girls in Houston County to read the same novel at the same time with AAUW members leading the groups at the individual elementary schools.

The program started in one school and continues with one school at a time. We completed our 4th year in February and March 2009. Centerville Elementary School in Centerville, Ga read Picture of Hollis Woods by Patricia Reilly Giff. Carrie Smith led the discussion over a 4 week period.

GRITS took place at Shirley Hills Elementary in the Fall of 2009 with Jane Winston as the discussion leader. The 5th graders read The Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson.

GRITS was last served at Kay Road Elementary.
